A Telling Ellipsis…”

Onto the Next Thing

My bookmark game in a book in front of books.

Towards the end of July we had a bad run of sickness in the family. It wasn’t serious, something a child brought home with them we think, but it did stay with us. All told I was off work for a fortnight. It wasn’t the virus du jour but it left us all low on energy.

The reason I bring this up here is that I think it’s interesting that the period of illness led into a period when we were away a few times visiting family in the next county then different family a sea voyage away. The disruption to routine has meant that my mindfulness practice is all over the place, I’m not reading or gaming anymore and I’ve not had time to write1. What does that mean though? It means it’s time for a reset!

For the purposes of this space let’s talk about what I’m working on next2. I’m toying with a few ideas currently, all in the same thematic area. My dream project is a big alt history setting book with light rules, lots of flavour and no canon. At the moment I don’t believe that I’m equipped to take that on, there are too many moving parts. There are things I can do to get started without getting started though.

The threads I want to follow are; a literature review3 and scoping a smaller project I can tackle with my current energy level. I have two contenders for the next small thing. The first is a follow up to my last post thinking about how to use common frameworks to tell different stories. The second is a stand alone short game in the vein of Two Weeks One Summer. The goal though is to take these and shape them into this history I can build from. I’ll go into more detail next time4.

  1. I did publish the game I’d finished my work on after notes from my editor wife though. It’s called Brilliant Rooks Change Lives and you can get it here.

  2. Other that attempting to align the spheres of my personal time, parenting and work. That’s the real project.

  3. Specifically I’m interested in setting heavy books like Heart, Neverland, Ultraviolet Grasslands, Vaults of Vaarn. I’d really like to get hold of A Thousand Thousand Islands too.

  4. Or I’ll do something else entirely.
